Nestled on the steep slopes of a dramatic ridgeline west of Huehuetenango, Guatemala, you'll find Arturo and Vielmann Villatoro’s farm, Finca Los Angeles. With elevations ranging from 1525 to 1800 meters above sea level, and Arturo's land is spread across both sides of the rugged ridgeline. The farm is a lush tapestry of native shade trees that offer a natural canopy, protecting coffee plants that thrive below from the hot afternoon sun. It even provides the pure mountain spring water used to wash the coffee when it is time for processing.
For eleven years Arturo lived in Los Angeles, California, picking fruit. Here he was affected profoundly by the stark difference in agricultural wages. After saving for his future, Arturo decided it was time to move home and buy land of his own to grow coffee alongside his father. He soon married and upgraded his farm with more drying patios and worker housing. Alongside his wife and three siblings, they dream of passing on this land to their children, ensuring it continues to flourish.
